Brachyspira is a genus of bacteria classified within the phylum Spirochaetota. Brachyspira species include pathogens in pigs, birds, dogs, and humans. B. pilosicoli colonizes millions of humans worldwide, leading to human intestinal spirochaetosis, a chronic, intermittent watery diarrhea vastly underdiagnosed because of the lack of a simple diagnostic tool for clinicians. Multiplex qPCRs are promising diagnostic tools, as Brachyspira do not grow on conventional media. B. pilosicoli also cause avian spirochetosis: birds might be considered as the natural reservoir.

  • Die Spirochäten-Gattung Brachyspira wurde erstmals 1982 beschrieben. Sie ist die einzige Gattung in der Familie der Brachyspiraceae. Alle Vertreter dieser gramnegativen Bakterien haben einen niedrigen GC-Gehalt und sind anaerob, können allerdings Sauerstoff tolerieren. Einige Arten sind krankheitserregend (pathogen). Die verursachten Infektionskrankheiten gehören zu den intestinalen Spirochätosen. Alle Arten können im Darm von verschiedenen Tieren (z. B. von Schweinen) und Menschen vorkommen.
  • Brachyspira o Serpulina es un género de bacterias de espiroquetas cuyo tamaño ronda las 0,2 x 1,7-6 μm. Como otras espiroquetas tienen forma helicoide y la longitud de onda de su helicoide mide 2 μm. De este género es característico la presencia de 4 flagelos periplásmicos insertados en ambos extremos de la célula. Son anaerobios pero toleran la atmósfera por lo menos durante 6 u 8 horas. Pueden ser cultivadas en un medio de agar de soja tríptica suplementada con un 5% de sangre de ternero. Son catalasa y oxidasa negativas.
  • Brachyspira – krętki należące do tego rodzaju są uważane za istotny czynnik etiologiczny ciężkich zakażeń przewodu pokarmowego wielu gatunków zwierząt. Należą do bakterii beztlenowych, o dużych wymaganiach wzrostowych. Wykazują one wiele cech różniących je od borelii i leptospir. Ogólnie przyjmuje się, że do rodzaju Brachyspira należą krętki, których wielkość waha się od 0,10 do 0,40 μm. Rozmieszczenie skrętów komórki jest u tych bakterii regularne lub nieregularne, w zależności od gatunku, a ich liczba mniejsza niż u innych rodzajów z grupy Spirochartes.
