Tratto dall'omonimo romanzo distopico e fantapolitico-postapocalittico del 1957 dello scrittore anglo-australiano Nevil Shute, è incentrato sulle vicende che si svolgono negli ultimi mesi dell'esistenza della vita sulla Terra prima della sua fine annunciata. Il titolo del film ha dato origine al modo di dire "essere (o trovarsi) all'ultima spiaggia".
