He was a profolic writer of songs a.o. for Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers and Bobby Goldsboro. Inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000 and into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006.

His early work writing for Elvis Presley produced the hits %22Memories%22, %22In the Ghetto%22, and %22A Little Less Conversation%22. A subsequent solo career in the 1970s produced hits, such as %22Baby, Don't Get Hooked on Me%22 making him a well-known name in pop music. He also starred in his own variety show, a Broadway musical, and various films and TV shows.
