abstract
  • Born: May 8th, 1940. Flamboyant glam-rock singer whose over-the-top performances made him one of the most successful UK acts of the 1970s. Gadd started his recording career as [a809714] in 1960, although a succession of singles under this name (and later as Paul Monday) made little impact. In 1971, with management by [a224754], he jumped on the glam bandwagon, releasing the single %22Rock N Roll%22 under the name Gary Glitter. It reached the top ten in both the UK and USA. Although his only major hit state-side, it was the first of many in the UK, under the guidance of [l364229]. Glitter's releases were, for the most part, fairly basic, but were made successful by his bravado and strutting showmanship. The hits dried up in the mid-70s, though he remained in the public eye via live performances and a 1984 comeback %22Another Rock N Roll Christmas%22, as well as being sampled by (and appearing on TV with) The Timelords for their 1988 chart-topper %22Doctorin' The Tardis%22. He went into semi-retirement in the 1990s, putting most of his musical energy into his annual Christmas gigs. However, his musical career ceased in 2000 after a 1999 conviction for child pornography, although he has stated plans to make a comeback as a musician, with at least one album planned. On 5 February 2015 Gary Glitter was found guilty of attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one of having sex with a girl under the age of 13, between 1975 and 1980.He was sentenced, on 27 February, to 16 years imprisonment.

  • Paul Francis Gadd (born 8 May 1944), known by the stage name Gary Glitter, is an English former glam rock singer-songwriter and musician who achieved great popular success between the early 1970s and mid-1980s. He has sold over 20 million records, spent 168 weeks in the UK charts and has had 21 hit singles placing him in the top 100 UK most successful chart acts. From 1997, he gained notoriety for sex offence allegations and convictions, being jailed for possession of child pornography in 1999 and child sexual abuse and attempted rape in 2006 and 2015.After performing under the name Paul Raven in the 1960s, he first came to prominence as Gary Glitter in the glam rock era of the early 1970s, with a sustained solo UK chart run of hits including %22Rock and Roll, Parts One and Two%22, %22Do You Wanna Touch Me%22, %22I Love You Love Me Love%22, %22I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am)%22, and %22Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again%22. A slight decline in the late 1970s was followed by a successful comeback as a solo artist again from the 1980s. Between 1972 and 1995, Glitter had 26 hit singles which spent a total of 180 weeks in the UK Top 100; twelve of those reached the Top 10, with three charting at number 1. He continued to record in the 1980s and 1990s, with his 1984 song %22Another Rock n' Roll Christmas%22 becoming one of the most played Christmas hits of all time. He released seven studio albums, and at least 15 greatest hits collections or live albums. In 1998, his recording of %22Rock and Roll%22 was listed as one of the top 1,001 songs in music history. The mostly instrumental %22Rock and Roll, Part 2%22 has been played as a popular cheering song at American sporting events for several decades. The BBC described Glitter's fall from grace as %22dramatic%22 and %22spectacular%22. The late 1990s saw his image become irreparably tarnished, following his 1997 arrest and 1999 conviction in the United Kingdom for possession of thousands of items of child pornography. He was also charged, but acquitted, of sexual activity with an underage girl in the 1970s. Later, Glitter faced criminal charges and deportation from several countries including Vietnam and Cambodia connected with actual and suspected child sexual abuse, after a Vietnamese court found him guilty of obscene acts with minors in 2006. He had been living in Vietnam since deportation from Cambodia on suspected child sexual abuse charges in 2002. Glitter was deported from Vietnam back to Britain at the end of his sentence, where he was placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for life.In October 2012, Glitter was arrested again as part of Operation Yewtree. He was bailed but was eventually charged, in June 2014, with historical child sex offences. On 5 February 2015, he was found guilty of attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault, and one of having sex with a girl under the age of 13 between 1975 and 1980. He was sentenced, on 27 February, to 16 years imprisonment. Formerly one of the best-loved entertainers in British music history, Glitter has devolved into a public hate figure.
