| - Luther Vandross was born on the Lower East Side of New York on April 20, 1951. His first big break came in 1975, when he performed as a backing singer on David Bowie's Young Americans album, and received a co-writer credit after his song %22Funky Music%22 was adapted by Bowie to become %22Fascination%22. He was also a backing singer for Bette Midler, Donna Summer and Carly Simon. He was lead singer of the group Change, which had hits such as %22A Lover's Holiday%22, %22Searching%22 and %22The Glow Of Love%22. In the late 1970s he was part of a singing quintet consisting former Shades of Jade members Anthony Hinton and Diane Sumler, Theresa V. Reed, and Christine Wiltshire, also called Luther. In 1981, Luther released his debut solo album [r=205940]. Between 1982 and 1985, five albums were released, all selling over a million copies each. Over the years, he was awarded five platinum and one double platinum disc, as well as winning 8 Grammy awards. He died July 1, 2005 at the age of 54, two years after suffering a major stroke.

| - Luther Ronzoni Vandross, Jr. (April 20, 1951 – July 1, 2005) was an American singer, songwriter and record producer. Throughout his career, Vandross was an in demand background vocalist for several different artists including Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Barbra Streisand, Ben E. King, and Donna Summer. He later became the lead singer of the group Change, which released its certified gold debut album, The Glow of Love, in 1980 on Warner Bros. Records. After Vandross left the group, he was signed to Epic Records as a solo artist and released his debut solo album, Never Too Much, in 1981.His hit songs include, %22Never Too Much%22, %22Here and Now%22, %22Any Love%22, %22Power of Love/Love Power%22, %22I Can Make It Better%22 and %22For You to Love%22. Many of his songs were covers of original music by other artists such as %22If This World Were Mine%22 (duet with Cheryl Lynn), %22Since I Lost My Baby%22, %22Superstar%22 and %22Always and Forever%22. Duets such as %22The Closer I Get to You%22 with Beyoncé, %22Endless Love%22 with Mariah Carey and %22The Best Things in Life Are Free%22 with Janet Jackson were all hits in his career.During his career, Vandross sold over 25 million records worldwide, and received eight Grammy Awards including Best Male R&B Vocal Performance four different times. He won a total of four Grammy Awards in 2004 including the Grammy Award for Song of the Year for a song recorded not long before his death, %22Dance with My Father%22. The song was co-written with Vandross' friend and protégé, Richard Marx.
