abstract	Patricio Manns (b. 1937) is a very influential chilean composer, musician, author, writer, and journalist. He was initiated in the field of music when he composed Bandido in 1959. Manns was a founding member, with the Parras (the children of Violeta Parra: Isabel and Ángel Parra) of the Peña of Carmen 340 (later known as the Peña of the Parra), later joined by Víctor Jara. These %22peñas%22 (group of people) served as a crucible where progressive neo-folklore transformed itself into the %22Nueva Canción Chilena%22 (NCC) (New Chilean Song) movement – a folkloric renaissance which led to a revolution in the popular music of the country. After 1973's military coup he exiled in Cuba and Italy, where he established with Horacio Salinas (%22Inti-Illimani%22) one of the most fruitful creative collaborations in the history of Chilean music. He returned to Chile in 1990.
