abstract
  • Vocal girl disco trio recording from 1974 to 1979. German producer/songwriter duo Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay released %22Save Me%22 in 1974 on Jupiter Records with session singers doing the sparse lyrics. Early editions using the artist name %22Silver Bird Convention.%22 The single was an early disco success in the UK (Magnet) and the artist name was changed to %22Silver Convention.%22Three German girls, Ramona Wulf - a former child star wanting a change of image - Penny McLean, and Jackie Carter formed the very first line-up. Carter, however, was quickly replaced with Linda G. Thompson after just a few TV-appearances. %22Fly, Robin, Fly%22 became a US #1-single as well as a massive hit in Europe. Penny McLean's solo single %22Lady Bump%22 - also a Levay/Kunze collaboration - topped the German charts at the same time. After another huge hit with the title track off their second album, %22Get Up And Boogie%22 (1976), success waned quickly. Their concept album %22Madhouse%22, seeing American Rhonda Heath replace Thompson, only yielded a minor hit-single with %22Everybody's Talkin' 'Bout Love%22, and the group's 1977 single %22Telegram%22, chosen to represent Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest, could only manage to come 8th in the finale. After an unsuccessful non-album single, %22The Boys From Liverpool%22, Penny McLean left the line-up and was replaced by British singer Zenda Jacks (real name Sue McCloskey). While the new line-up went on a tour, Levay and Kunze parted ways, Kunze hooking up with Philadelphia arranger John Davis (5) for the group's final album %22Love In A Sleeper%22 which yielded the US disco hit %22Spend The Night With Me%22 before the group disbanded.A brief comeback happened in 1979, seeing Penny McLean return to the line-up, but the single %22Café Au Lait%22 / %22Rollermania%22 was another flop.Ramona Wulf (the only remaining member throughout all the line-ups) has occasionally reformed with Penny McLean and Linda G. Thompson over the years for the odd TV-appearance.
