abstract	Skyclad was formed in 1990 by Martin Walkyier (recently departed from Sabbat (2)) and Steve Ramsey with a view to create the %22ultimate pagan metal band%22. Skyclad are considered by many to be pioneers of folk metal; their earlier work is characterized by Thrash - not entirely dissimilar to Walkier's previous band Sabbat, albeit with ever increasing Folk influences. The etymology behind the term %22skyclad%22 comes from a pagan/wiccan term for ritual nudity, in which rituals are performed with the participants metaphorically clad only by the sky, as a sign of equality. The name alludes both to the band's religious leanings and to their social beliefs, as set out in the song %22Skyclad%22 on their first album.
