Sheeran wrote for the last time about his ex-girlfriend who inspired all the romantic compositions off his debut album, +. The minimalist song, produced by frequent collaborator Jake Gosling, derives its music from acoustic guitar. Critics were generally positive toward the song, which was noted for its being guitar-driven and Sheeran's use of falsetto.An official video, which was shot in an empty Wembley Stadium and rendered in black and white, preceded the song's release on 14 May 2014. Being the first promotional single from x, the release was meant to balance %22Sing%22, the R&B-pop lead single that was feared would alienate Sheeran's fan base. In Europe, the song appeared in several charts; it reached number 18 on the UK Singles Chart and has since been certified silver in that country, denoting sales of over 200,000 units.
