abstract
  • %22Die Young%22 is a song by American recording artist Kesha. It was released on September 25, 2012 as the lead single from her second studio album, Warrior (2012). Kesha co-wrote the electropop song with its producers, Dr. Luke, Benny Blanco, and Cirkut, with additional writing from Nate Ruess, the lead singer of FUN. Kesha wrote the lyrics after traveling around the world and embarking on a spiritual journey.%22Die Young%22 charted in multiple countries, debuting at 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In its third week, %22Die Young%22 broke into the top-ten, making it Kesha's seventh top-ten hit since her debut on the chart in 2010 with %22Tik Tok%22 and ninth top-ten hit including her collaborations with Flo Rida and 3OH!3. It eventually peaked at number two, continuing Kesha's string of top-ten hits. The song has also reached the top ten in multiple countries worldwide, including most of the anglosphere and has received a platinum certification in five countries.Contemporary critics gave the song mixed to positive reviews; MTV, Seventeen, and Rolling Stone were disappointed with it, reflecting on its similarity to Kesha's other songs, while others praised it. The song has noticeable similarities to Flo Rida's %22Good Feeling%22 (2011). To a lesser extent, it has also been compared to %22Domino%22 (2011) by Jessie J, and %22Teenage Dream%22 (2010) by Katy Perry. Two teaser trailers were posted prior to the single's official release. A lyric video for the song was published to YouTube. The official music video for %22Die Young%22 was also made available for download. In it, she plays the role of a cultist, leading her disciples in a sex ritual. Music magazine Billboard reported on the symbolism used in the video, documenting synergy with it and the Illuminati conspiracy theory. The official remix features rappers Juicy J, Wiz Khalifa, and Becky G. In December 2012, the song attracted some controversy when it was removed from some radio stations in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting; critics called the lyrics controversial and inappropriate due to the loss of so many young lives during the event.
