Die Dreieinigkeit, Dreifaltigkeit oder Trinität (lateinisch trinitas; altgriechisch τριάς Trias ‚Dreizahl‘, ‚Dreiheit‘) ist in der christlichen Theologie die Wesenseinheit Gottes in drei Personen oder Hypostasen, nicht drei Substanzen. Diese werden „Vater“ (Gott der Vater, Gott Vater oder Gottvater), „Sohn“ (Jesus Christus, Sohn Gottes oder Gott Sohn) und „Heiliger Geist“ (Geist Gottes) genannt. Damit wird zugleich ihre Unterscheidung und ihre unauflösbare Einheit ausgedrückt. Ausgehend von biblischen Vorgaben und frühchristlicher liturgischer Praxis, wurde die christliche Trinitätslehre seit dem 2. Jahrhundert durch verschiedene Theologen und Synoden zwischen 325 (Erstes Konzil von Nicäa) und 675 (Synode von Toledo) entwickelt. Kontrovers war langezeit die Frage, wie sich die Einheit Gottes und die Dreiheit göttlicher Personen begrifflich und in ihrem Verhältnis fassen lässt. Im Zuge des arianischen Streits wurde im 4. Jahrhundert von mehreren Theologen die Auffassung vertreten, dass Sohn und Heiliger Geist gegenüber Gott-Vater als untergeordnet zu verstehen seien (Subordination). Dabei vertrat der Presbyter Arius aus Alexandria die Auffassung, dass der Sohn geschaffen und daher nicht wahrer Gott sei. Die ebenfalls aus Alexandria kommenden Bischöfe Alexander und später Athanasius vertraten im Unterschied dazu die Auffassung, dass Christus dem Vater wesensgleich und damit gleichrangig sei und so als wahrer Gott die Menschheit durch sein Werk erlösen konnte. Später ging es auch um die Stellung des Heiligen Geistes. Die Kontroversen wurden geprägt durch unterschiedliche Formen der Anknüpfung an philosophische, insbesondere mittelplatonische Vorstellungen (Logos, Emanation) und griechische bzw. lateinische Begrifflichkeit wie ousia (Wesenheit), substantia oder „Hypostase“. So wurde im 4. Jahrhundert zwischen Theologen des östlichen und des westlichen Teils des Römischen Reiches in unterschiedlicher Weise von einer bzw. drei „Hypostasen“ gesprochen. Die drei aus Kappadozien stammenden Theologen Basilius der Große, Gregor von Nyssa und Gregor von Nazianz vermittelten das Konzept der Gleichheit der Substanz (ousia) nach, wie sie das (erste) Konzil von Nicäa (325) festgehalten hatte, mit der u. a. durch Origenes ausgeprägten Redeweise von drei „Hypostasen“, indem beide Begrifflichkeit unterschieden und aufeinander bezogen wurden: Demnach gibt es in Gott eine Substanz und drei Hypostasen. In dieser Linie stehen die Kompromissformeln, die auf dem ersten Konzil von Konstantinopel bzw. dem Konzil von Chalcedon ausgebildet wurden. Heute befinden sich Antitrinitarier und Unitarier in der Minderheit. Im Kirchenjahr ist Trinitatis, der erste Sonntag nach Pfingsten, dem Gedenken der Dreieinigkeit Gottes gewidmet. In anderen Religionen gibt es die Vorstellung von einer göttlichen Dreiheit (Trias), so etwa in der altägyptischen mit Osiris, Isis und Horus.Auch der Hinduismus kennt eine solche Dreiheit: die Trimurti, bestehend aus den Göttern Brahma, Vishnu und Shiva. Inwieweit solche vorchristlichen antiken Konzepte Analogien zur Trinitätslehre aufweisen oder sogar deren Entstehung beeinflusst haben, ist umstritten. Schon Tertullian hat die christliche Lehre vom Konzept einer Trias abgegrenzt, indem er (offenbar als Erster) den Ausdruck „Trinität“ (trinitas) benutzte. Judentum und Islam lehnen das Konzept der Trinität strikt ab.
