Gargoyle jest oparty na stabilnym wydaniu OpenWrt Backfire. W rzeczywistości jest możliwość bardzo łatwej instalacji dodatkowych pakietów, które nie są domyślnie zainstalowane, a które chcemy wykorzystać.Dla niektórych routerów standardowo dodano dodatkowo obsługę urządzeń USB i co ważne możliwość obsługi modemów 3G. Gargoyle posiada m.in. także dodaną obsługę SAMBA i FTP. Te funkcje można uzyskać w podstawowej wersji OpenWrt po instalacji dodatkowych pakietów.
