A nation is a community of people formed on the basis of a combination of shared features such as language, history, ethnicity, culture and/or society. A nation is thus the collective identity of a group of people understood as defined by those features. Some nations are equated with ethnic groups (see ethnic nationalism) and some are equated with affiliation to a social and political constitution (see civic nationalism and multiculturalism). A nation is generally more overtly political than an ethnic group. A nation has also been defined as a cultural-political community that has become conscious of its autonomy, unity and particular interests.

  • Nation (um 1400 ins Deutsche übernommen, von lateinisch natio, „Volk, Sippschaft, Herkunft“ oder „Geburt“, ursprünglich für eine „Geburtsgemeinschaft“, abgeleitet vom Verb nasci, „geboren werden“) bezeichnet größere Gruppen oder Kollektive von Menschen, denen gemeinsame Merkmale wie Sprache, Tradition, Sitten, Bräuche oder Abstammung zugeschrieben werden. Der Nationsbegriff hat Bedeutung für den völkerrechtlichen und den politischen Bereich.
  • Il termine nazione (dal latino natio, in italiano «nascita») si riferisce ad una comunità di individui che condividono alcune caratteristiche come il luogo geografico, la cultura (cioè la lingua, la religione, la storia e le tradizioni), l'etnia ed, eventualmente, un governo. Un'altra definizione considera la nazione come uno "stato sovrano" che può far riferimento a un popolo, a un'etnia, a una tribù con una discendenza, una lingua e magari una storia in comune.

Het begrip is niet slechts academisch, maar heeft ook een sterke politieke lading en kent dan ook vele definities. Criteria kunnen objectief zijn zoals verwantschap, cultuur, taal of religie. Subjectieve criteria zijn verbondenheid en solidariteit die gevoeld wordt door een groep. Als de natie grotendeels samenvalt met de staat wordt wel gesproken van een natiestaat.
