| - La trazabilidad es definida por la Organización Internacional para la Estandarización (ISO 9001:2008), en su International Vocabulary of Basic and General Terms in Metrology, como: La propiedad del resultado de una medida o del valor de un estándar donde éste pueda estar relacionado con referencias especificadas, usualmente estándares nacionales o internacionales, a través de una cadena continua de comparaciones todas con incertidumbres especificadas. Según el Comité de Seguridad Alimentaria de AECOC:
- Traceability (z ang. „trace” – namierzać, śledzić oraz „ability” – zdolność, umiejętność) – zdolność wyśledzenia, identyfikowalność. W pewnych przypadkach termin ten interpretuje się jako zdolność do weryfikacji historii, lokalizacji lub zastosowania danego elementu na podstawie zgromadzonej dokumentacji.Istnieją również inne popularne definicje, które w swej treści ujmują także zdolność (oraz wdrożenie ku temu odpowiednich środków) bieżącego kontrolowania zbioru lub typu informacji. Jest to także umiejętność chronologicznego skorelowania identyfikowanych elementów w sposób umożliwiający weryfikację.Termin traceability ma swoje zastosowanie między innymi w medycynie, łańcuchu dostaw i produkcji, informatyce oraz bezpieczeństwie. - La traçabilité désigne la situation dans laquelle on dispose de l'information nécessaire et suffisante pour connaître (éventuellement de façon rétrospective) la composition d'un matériau ou d'un produit du commerce tout au long de sa chaîne de production, de transformation et de distribution. Le terme vient de l'anglais traceability qui signifie littéralement « aptitude au traçage » ; il n'est pas reconnu, mais simplement toléré par l'Académie française.

- Traceability is the capability to trace something. In some cases, it is interpreted as the ability to verify the history, location, or application of an item by means of documented recorded identification. Other common definitions include the capability (and implementation) of keeping track of a given set or type of information to a given degree, or the ability to chronologically interrelate uniquely identifiable entities in a way that is verifiable. Traceability is applicable to measurement, supply chain, software development, healthcare and security.
